Prize giving

Prize Giving July 2011 was an eagerly awaited occasion due to the celebration being combined with the official opening of the newly built Academy Fitness Centre.

Based around the theme 'I Can', the King's students welcomed Sally Gunnell OBE and former British Olympic Champion in the 400m hurdles. The prestigious personality spent time talking to our Academy sports students throughout the morning about her life in athletics, before meeting the Academy directors and sports staff to officially open the Fitness Suite at 1.00pm.

The athlete then embarked on her next hurdle, as guest speaker at our seventh annual prizegiving ceremony in front of 1,500 students, staff, parents and guests, where she praised the sporting successes and the achievements of the students and even invited one of our students onto stage to wear her coveted Gold Olympic Medal.

The event held on Tuesday 12th July, saw awards being presented for effort, achievement, sport, music, poetry, citizenship and in special areas such as progress in learning and work experience. The Poetry Award was presented to James McDonald with his poem entitled 'Home'; the Short Story Award went to Rachael Clarkson and the House Cup was awarded to the House of Medes. Lana Walker scooped the    Academy Drama Bowl and Chairman's Award for Musician of the Year, with Outstanding Student of the Year being presented to Jade Taylor-Cockerill.
